The Aunties (Stage One Festival) June 26, 2026
The staged reading of The Aunties by Wendy Walker bridges the settler and the Indigenous. The message at the heart of the piece focuses upon how to survive in the corporate world while being grounded and connected. This notion of “walking in two worlds” perpecuates the piece thoroughly from beginning to end. Through comedic jokes from her aunties, Jo and Marie, Nita is able build up her sense of being grounded. Even in judgement, this world exists in a space of love and connection to the land, providing a strong contrast to the opening which is high-stakes and high tension.
